  • Facial lacerations
  • Intra oral lacerations
  • Avulsed (knocked out) teeth
  • Fractured facial bones (cheek, nose or eye socket)
  • Fractured jaws (upper and lower jaw)

Is a facial fracture a serious issue?

Not always, but it can be. If you have had any type of facial trauma it is best to be seen by a doctor right away. There are nerves and muscles located all around your facial bones. If these are damaged and not repaired quickly, it could cause long term problems.

What are some common symptoms of a facial fracture?

This really depends on the type of facial fracture. For a nose fracture you may notice a purple bruise on the skin of your nose, black eyes, blockage of your nostril(s), a crooked nose or a nosebleed.

For an orbital fracture (eye) you may notice blurry, decrease or double vision, trouble moving your eyes in different directions, a swollen forehead or swelling under the eyes, flatness in your cheeks, sunken or bulging eyeballs, numbness near the injury area or blood in the white part of your eye.

For a jaw fracture you may notice trouble chewing, eating or talking, missing or loose teeth, teeth not fitting together properly (incorrect bite) or cheek pain when you open your mouth.

All of these are serious and should be looked at immediately by a qualified medical provider.

What can I do if I think I have a facial fracture?

First you need to see a qualified provider so they can confirm that you have a fracture. Next they will come up with a plan on how to fix that fracture and how to help you heal best. The surgeons at The Oral Institute of the Carolinas are  Board Certified and Diplomats of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
